Kiki Dee & Carmelo Luggeri – An Acoustic Journey

Kiki Dee left school at 16 and worked at Boots in Bradford but in the evenings sang songs by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald with a dance band in Leeds. When a record company scout saw her perform one night he invited her to London to do an audition and she was promptly signed as a solo artist to Fontana Records in 1963.

As Kiki, she released her debut single Early Night the same year and recorded her debut album. She also gained a reputation as a superb backing session singer, working with artists such as Dusty Springfield. She made history in 1970 as the first white British artist signed to Tamla Motown.

Yet it wasn’t until 1973 that Kiki achieved solo success with her first number one single in the UK, the ballad Amoureuse. The following year she had one of her best-known hits I’ve Got The Music In Me.

“If I ever write an autobiography I shall call it Telephone Calls, because there have been two or three phone calls that have altered the course of my life,” she says. “Such as the day I called Motown’s UK music manager John Reid and told him that although working with Motown had been a great project and had gone OK I didn’t know what to do next.

“He replied, ‘Well funnily enough I’m managing an artist called Elton John and we’re starting a new label together.'”

To this day Don’t Go Breaking My Heart – Elton’s first UK No1 – is the record most people remember Kiki for. She and Elton were booked to perform seven straight nights at New York’s prestigious Madison Square Garden during that same stay in 1976 when she’d talked chips with Lennon.
